How Do I Beard?

A beginner's guide to being bearded.

We all know how much time, effort and money you’ve spent getting the majestic mane you have now. But are you really going to let beard dandruff (otherwise known as beardruff) drive you crazy? Hell no!

Growing a beard has always come with its challenges. Although it does make a man look more stylish and give him a rugged look, it does require a lot of care and tending to and, if ignored, can kill your whole vibe. If you’re also suffering from beardruff, it’s safe to say you’re not alone. Almost everyone who has a beard has suffered the consequences of taking beard maintenance lightly. But let us understand what Beardruff is.

What is Beard Dandruff (Beardruff)?

Beardruff is the white flaky dandruff that you see in your beard. Beardruff can also cause irritation mentally as well as physically. It can be caused due to various reasons, and two of the major contributing factors could be;

  1. The skin under your beard isn’t nourished (moisturised) as it should be due to the beard getting in the way

  2. You may be suffering from a fungal infection caused due to lack of sunlight.

How do you cure this without having to shave your beard off?

Kicking the beardruff’s ass is relatively easy and economical. All you have to do is follow a step-by-step routine every time you wash your face.

Wash your Beard

This step is child’s play but also one of the essential steps. You should use a beard & face wash and not the regular shampoo that you use on your hair - because your beard hair is far thicker and bushier than the hair on your head. Use a beard and face wash that doesn’t strip off the natural oils from your face. Make sure that you wash off all the soapiness from your beard to avoid infection.

Brush your Beard

Brushing can not only entangle your beard; it increases blood flow to your skin that’s hiding behind your beard and exfoliates your skin under the beard, reducing the chances of you getting beard dandruff in the first place. Brushing your beard can also act as a beardruff detector. If you see white flaky skin beneath your beard, you’ve got a terrible case of beardruff.

Always Moisturize

These days, everyone uses one or the other type of beard oil, balm or moisturizer for their beard that suits their skin type. Using oils or lotions can keep your skin under the beard moisturized to prevent it from drying out. Pump a few drops on your palm, rub your hands together to warm it up and gently apply it into the skin under your beard while working it through your beard.

How do I stop it from coming back?

Once you’re free from beardruff, keep following the step-by-step routine. Monitor how your skin reacts to the type of products you’re using. See a dermatologist if the problem persists or increases for some reason.

Beard dandruff is more common than you think, and with proper care, you can get your sanity back. Ensure you never neglect the signs your skin beneath the beard shows you. Keep your sanity and your majestic mane without letting beardruff mess it up, because happy beard means a happy man.
